CELTA Course Programme

Course Methodology

The aim of the course is to develop the following areas of teaching expertise:

  • Principles of effective teaching
  • Practical experience in teaching English to adults
  • Application of acquired knowledge in your own teaching practice

The course covers five main topics:

  • Learners and teachers, and the teaching and learning context
  • Language analysis and awareness
  • Language skills: reading, listening, speaking and writing
  • Planning and resources for different contexts
  • Developing teaching skills and professionalism

Assessment

Your work will be assessed throughout the course; there is no final examination.
Each CELTA course is conducted by experienced CELTA trainers authorised by Cambridge English Qualifications, and the final grades are confirmed by a Cambridge assessor who ensures the quality and consistency of all CELTA courses.

Assessment is based on two components: teaching practice and written assignments.
To be awarded the CELTA certificate, candidates must pass both components. Certificates are issued to candidates whose work meets the course criteria and requirements and who submit a complete portfolio of written assignments.

Results are awarded at one of three grades: Pass, Pass B, or Pass A.

Teaching Practice

The course includes six hours of assessed teaching practice with groups of adult learners at two different levels of English proficiency.
Each lesson, as well as your overall teaching performance throughout the course, will be assessed.

Written Assignments

Candidates complete four written assignments in the following areas:

  • Analysing and responding to learner needs
  • Analysing language for teaching purposes
  • Teaching language skills
  • Reflecting on classroom teaching and planning for future development

Entry Requirements for the CELTA Course

  • Age: 20+ (candidates aged 18–20 may be accepted onto the course following a successful interview)
  • English proficiency: a high level of both spoken and written English — at least C1 (Advanced) or above
  • Language awareness: sufficient knowledge and understanding of the English language to enable effective teaching
  • Education: a university degree in any field (candidates with qualifications equivalent to university entry level may also be accepted following a successful interview)
